An example is the Preferred Lies Rule for play in winter.




The Local Rules here apply at all times:

First Green

  • Out of Bounds (Rule 27) A ball is out of bounds if it comes to rest:

    • Beyond: any hedge, fence, wall, line of white posts or ditch bounding the course, including the ditch left of the 10th fairway, the line of white posts right of the 18th hole; and the wall separating the course from the Abbey cemetery;

    • On or beyond the footpath in the wood above the 1st, 2nd and 3rd holes;

    • On or beyond the car park, any path, patio or flower bed by the club house;

    • When playing the 5th hole only: Beyond the line of white posts and then in or beyond the stream to the left of and parallel to the fairway;

    • When playing the 7th hole only: Beyond the stream on the right as far as the line of white posts across the 8th fairway and then beyond that line;

    • On or beyond the public road which divides the course.

  • Lateral Water Hazards (Rule 26):

    • The stream to the right of the 7th hole as far as the line defined by white posts, the stream to the right of the 8th hole and the ditch to the left of the 10th hole are Lateral Water Hazards;

    • All other streams, ditches, and ponds are Water Hazards.

  • Other Rules: There is a free drop from a ball lying on a buggy path, within one club length no nearer to the hole.

  • Stones In Bunkers are movable obstructions, (Rule 24-1).

  • Protection of Young Trees:

    • Identified by a stake or white paint. If such a tree interferes with a player's stance, or the area of his intended swing, the ball must be lifted, without penalty and dropped in accordance with Rule 24-2b(i).

  • White Posts defining Internal Out of Bounds are immovable obstructions when playing holes to which they do not relate. Rule 24-2b(i).

  • Fixed Sprinkler Heads are immovable obstructions and relief from interference may be obtained under Rule 24-2. In addition, if such an obstruction within two club lengths of the putting green of the hole being played intervenes on the line of play between the ball and the hole, the player may obtain relief, without penalty, as follows:

    • If the ball lies off the putting green but not in a hazard and is within two club lengths of the intervening obstruction, it may be lifted, cleaned and dropped at the nearest point to where the ball lay which: (a) is not nearer the hole, (b) avoids such intervention and (c) is not in a hazard or on a putting green.

  • Embedded Ball

    • Through the green, a ball embedded in its own pitch mark in the ground, other than sand, may be lifted without penalty, cleaned and dropped as near as possible to where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball, when dropped, must first strike a part of the course through the green.

  • Ground Under Repair Play Prohibited (Rule 25-1)

    • Any area of the course marked by white lines and/or marked "GUR" is ground under repair from which play is prohibited. If a ball lies in such an area, or if it interferes with the player's stance or the area of his/her intended swing, then the ball must be lifted without penalty, cleaned and dropped within one club length of, and not nearer the hole than, the point of relief, on a part of the course which avoids the interference and is not in a hazard or on a putting green.

  • Relief from Aeration Holes

    • On the putting green, a ball that comes to rest in or on an aeration hole may be lifted withour penalty, cleaned and placed at the nearest spot not nearer the hole that avoids such a situation.

  • Penalty for Breach of a Local Rule:

    • Match Play: loss of hole.

    • Stroke Play: Two strokes.

  • Definitions:

    • Casual Water: Any temporary accumulation of water on the course that is visible before or after the player takes his/her stance and is not in a water hazard. (Rule 25-1)atch Play: loss of hole.

    • Through the Green is the whole area of the course except (a) the teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played and (b) all hazards on the course.

  • Etiquette is an essential part of the game of golf, so please:

    • Do not play until the group in front is out of range;

    • Play without delay. Avoid slow play at all times. If searching for a ball, allow the group behind to play through;

    • Take care of the course. Repair divots, repair pitch marks on greens. Level sand before leaving bunkers. No practice swinging on grass tees;

    • Maintain a reasonable standard of dress, eg. shorts suitable for golf may be worn, but swimming trunks, running shorts and sleeveless vests are not permissible. Do not remove clothing that may cause offence to others;

    • Sharing of golf clubs is not allowed, each player must have a golf bag and at least four golf clubs;

    • Maximum number of players in any group is four. A single player has no standing and must give way;

    • All play must start at the 1st Tee, cutting in is not permitted.
