Carnacki pilot episode script
My first attempt at adapting Carnacki The Ghost Finder for tv was in the early 1990s. In the wake of Granada tv's excellent Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes adaptation, I sent my first draft of CARNACKI : THE GATEWAY (an adaptation of Gateway Of The Monster) to the BBC, Granada and London Weekend Television. The BBC and Granada were not interested but I did receive quite an encouraging reply from someone at LWT who suggested there were interested and would be in touch again after a series of management changes at the company. They never were and my subsequent attempts to interest the new management met with failure.
Ten years and one unpublished novel later, after being inspired by Kim Newman's novel ANNO DRACULA and LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN by Alan Moore and Kevin ("credo!") O'Neil, I rewrote CARNACKI : THE GATEWAY and created this website around it as a means of promotion. After finishing the website I followed the BBC's new extensive procedure for submitting new material to the letter I waited for the response eagerly. After six months I received an automated rejection notice from the BBC in the form of a small postcard. Subsequent attempts to interest literary and media agents were also unsuccessful.
I put the screenplay away without even attaching it to the website and returned to writing novels, which are at least fun and therapeutic (if equally unsuccessful).
