"FOOTSTEPS" is a most
descriptive, interesting and sometimes amusing account of the family history of
one branch of the Dorset Foot Family. It is followed by an account of the
author's parent's lives and of his own childhood until 1946.
The author then goes on to describe events and incidents of his working life of 49 years in the Royal Navy, of his promotions through the ranks to Lieutenant Commander and then on to his retirement. He concludes with a self-analysis of his own character by reflecting on how his ancestors, family background and naval career may have helped to formulate his own character and opinions.
"FOOTSTEPS" will be of special interest
to members and descendants of the Foot/Foote and Bennett families, both in
Dorset and in Ontario, Canada, and also to those interested in the Dorsetshire
Countryside and the events in the farming communities, of both Dorset and
Ontario over the last three hundred years. Since publishing 'Footsteps' the
author has continued to research his family history and has got back as far as
1490. He has now identified over 2,600 names of ancestors and 'cousins', many
of them still in Dorset but also many in Canada and New Zealand.
"Additionally it contains much interesting
information on life in the Royal Navy from 1946 through to 1995. There will be
many hundreds, perhaps thousands, of naval officers and ratings who will
recognise and identify with the events, places and situations described.
"FOOTSTEPS" will form a useful addition
to those describing life in this century and will be a valuable record for
succeeding generations. It has received considerable acclaim from those
interested in the social history of the village and farming communities of
North Dorset during the past 400 years. The author will be very willing to give
a 'Talk' on 'How he Researched his Family History and How he Wrote and
Published his own Books', to any organisation so interested. The 'Talk'
will last about one hour.

The author has recently edited and
published a book of poems which detail the life of an Alfred Slann who was born
in 1851 and was brought up in Bramham Yorkshire. He died some time after 1927.
He wrote these poems between 1917 and 1927 and they are delightful poems, which
reveal his worries about his son away in France during World War I and for his
family. He had a battle within himself over his belief in God and his poetical discussions
with himself are most interesting. Many of is poems, especially those about his
childhood, are amusing and reflect the thinking of the period.
