Hillside Singers and Opera

HILLSIDE SINGERS

The choir was founded in 1971 and recently celebrated its Silver Jubilee. A wide range of music was performed in a variety of styles, sometimes unaccompanied, more often with piano accompaniment and occasionally with an orchestra. Jill Meager, the founder, is now retired and having held a Final Farewell Concert in April 2002 (see 'Current Programme'), Hillside Singers have sadly ceased to be.

This site has been left in place for hisorical and sentimental reasons

but is no longer any reflection of current activity

Membership is by audition - sight reading ability is desirable but not absolutely necessary. Solo singers are encouraged, as most of the solo work comes from within the choir. There are a small number of vacancies. Any interested singers should contact the conductor Jill Meager on 023 80 551088.

Rehearsals are on Thursdays at various central Southampton venues from 7.30pm to 9.45pm.

HILLSIDE OPERA

Sadly, Hillside Opera Ceased in the new millennium with Jill Meager's retirement.
Hillside Singers (above) continued until April 2002.

HILLSIDE OPERA was formed in 1983 by its Artistic Director, Jill Meager. Her vision is to provide a platform for trained and accomplished amateur singers and young professionals seeking experience in opera roles not usually accessible to them.

The activities are organised to accommodate singers with busy lives, following careers in or outside music, or in full time study. Rehearsals take place over a very short but intense period. This especially suits our wide net of talented singers, some living as far away as East Sussex, Surrey or Oxfordshire.

Roles are often double cast allowing one cast to provide the chorus for the other on alternate performances. Chorus work is encouraged for all as a very useful discipline, both musically and dramatically.

Hillside Opera undertakes 3 or 4 projects each year. When financial resources allow, one will be a full production, and perhaps another will be a concert tour of costumed opera excerpts.
